Cas­tle church in Lauch­ham­mer Cas­tle Park

The 14-hectare palace park dates back to the time when Baroness von Löwen­dal had the palace ren­o­vated. The strictly sym­met­ri­cal gar­den with its many exotic plants was designed to match the baroque palace. The park and cas­tle expe­ri­enced a change­ful fate. After the death of the patroness, the park was redesigned in the pre­vail­ing Eng­lish style. It was dev­as­tated by storms twice - in 1912 and 2007 - and has been restored again and again. Rows of hedges indi­cate the loca­tion of Mücken­berg Cas­tle, which fell vic­tim to arson on April 24, 1945.

The baroque build­ing was occu­pied by Baroness von Löwen­dal in 1738 after the thor­ough ren­o­va­tion of the almost dilap­i­dated pre­vi­ous build­ing. She lived here until her death in 1776. The replica of the fig­ure of the “Lady of Her­cu­la­neum” on a traf­fic cir­cle is a reminder of the ori­gins of the art foundry.

The for­mer cas­tle church from 1746 is also worth a visit. Instead of a bell tower, it only has a mod­est ridge tur­ret, as it was adapted to the exte­rior of the for­mer orangery in order to cre­ate a har­mo­nious ensem­ble of build­ings. The inte­rior is in the rococo style, which is rare for churches. Con­certs and other events are held in the church.

There is an ani­mal enclo­sure at the edge of the cas­tle park. The cas­tle park is the venue for the town fes­ti­val every two years.
